Addressing the "Quick Fix" Mindset
Unrealistic expectations in the clinic & over-reaching in training are common issues. How do you overcome the “quick fix” instant result mindset?
Do you daily see clients/patients impatient for results?
The problem is trying to”fix” things immediately leads to over-reaching in both treatment & training.
Doing more or working harder isn’t always better. Investing in your health or performance bank account is just like your financial bank account. It takes time to accrue wealth in health & performance just like financially.
To increase your Health or Performance Credit Score
Requires -
Time or patience
&
2. Acceptance that there will be both ups & downs as well as plateaus

Related to this is thinking that there’s one “right” way & becoming overwhelmed fearing your’re not doing the right thing. Instead of worrying that you’re missing out by not using the best technique or approach let the methods serve the goals. A patient, goal driven approach is the surest way to success.
Example: Acute, severe LBP. Person has friends recommending an overwhelming myriad of options. Biohacks, various “corrective” strategies, etc. As is often the case there’s severe timeline pressure. Outcome - more disability. Why? “Too much too soon” following well intentioned advice chasing the right or best method.
The solution is to find someone you can trust who is 100% person-centered as a result of focusing on what’s of value in your life and building back your intrinsic motivation & self-efficacy.
By focusing on goals instead of methods we mitigate the risk of a poor results by putting the methods at the service of your goals rather than vice-versa. There are no “quick fixes” or “cookbook” solutions. Pain & Performance are complex issues in the musculoskeletal space which require humility and a team approach to problem-solve.
If you want to increase the probability of getting back to your what you love or want to do find someone who will support you on this journey.
To pivot from feeling fragile to feeling resilient requires that your coaches empower you by giving you agency and confidence. That is the meaning of intrinsic motivation & self-efficacy. They “guide by the side” offering support and giving you options instead of offering the false hope of a “quick fix” or tell you that there is one best approach.
What does SUPPORTED Self-Management look like?:
“Be reassured when in doubt or have any concern, or just need support I’m here for you. 80% of what Best Practice is entails Reassurance & gradual Reactivation.”
Regardless of whether the goal is rehab (e.g. pain relief) or performance (e.g. training “gains) a collaborative, supported environment focuses on what your client values. This is essential for an infinite mindset vs quick fix mindset. It takes us lightyears beyond a transactional relationship grounded in procedures to a true coach-client team approach focused on determining what matters to each person, measuring it, and then planning to achieve it.
